Yesterday marked the beginning of the Chinese Lunar New Year; and for Guyanese, we’ve come to acknowledge commemorations like these, because of the meaningful impact that the Chinese people have had on the shaping of Guyanese history and culture.
The Sino-Guyanese population have, and continue to play a big role in shaping the developmental landscape of Guyana.
Today, we acknowledge Arthur Raymond Chung, OE, the first President of Guyana.
Arthur Chung was the first president of Guyana after the country became a republic in 1970. Serving from 1970 to 1980, his tenure marked a significant period in Guyana’s post-independence history. Born on January 10, 1918, in Georgetown, Guyana, to a family of Chinese descent, Chung’s early education was in local schools, and he later pursued studies in law. He was trained as a barrister in the United Kingdom and worked as a lawyer and legal advisor in Guyana.
Arthur Chung’s political career began with his involvement in the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and his active role in the country’s legal and political system. In 1961, he became the first ethnic Chinese person in Guyana to be appointed to the position of a judge in the Guyana Court of Appeal, further cementing his influence in the legal and political sphere.

My time in India 🇮🇳 has come to an end, and it was a truly enjoyable experience of connecting with people and culture. Certainly there were aspects that reminded me of home 🇬🇾 but also, there were aspects that were diverse and equally beautiful. On my final day as I passed through Chennai, I thought about the indentured workers who were sent to Guyana from this area and the resilience that resulted in aspects of Indian culture now being a part of Guyanese culture. We are products of this resilience. #goldrush #guyanese #culture #diaspora #guyanesetingz🇬🇾
Truthfully, my visit to India to attend a wedding, was exhilarating! There were so many aspects of Indian life and culture that reminded me of Guyana- can you spot some of them in this video? This is truly what it means when we say Guyana is a melting pot of cultures. As a Guyanese diasporan I pay attention to both the similarities and differences and I observe how they have undoubtedly shaped us. #goldrush #guyanese #diaspora #culture #india
One of the practices that really intrigued me as a Guyanese 🇬🇾 girl in India, is “coconut smashing”, in the Hindu Religion. The persons conducting this practice explained that the more pieces the coconut breaks into, the more likely their prayers are to come true! Fascinating! Have you heard of or experienced this tradition before? #guyanese #diaspora #goldrush #india #culture
